for creation, revision, or deletion:
These courses are being added in response to
comments from our most recent accreditation report from the National
Association of Schools of Music (NASM) in order to bring our curriculum up to
NASM standards. Specifically:
The addition of MUSC 335 Basic conduction meets the
following NASM requirement:
Students must acquire knowledge and skills sufficient to work as a leader and in collaboration on matters of music interpretation. Rehearsal and conducting skills are required as appropriate to the particular music concentration. (NASM Handbook 2001-2002, page 82, item VII.A.4)
The addition of MUSC403 OR MUSC405 Symphonic
Literature, the recommendation that the other course be taken as an elective,
and the addition of MUSC481 Pedagogy and Literature meets the following NASM requirement:
Comprehensive capabilities in the major performing medium including the ability to work independently to prepare performances at the highest possible level; knowledge of applicable solo and ensemble literature; and orientation to and experience with the fundamentals of pedagogy. (NASM Handbook 2001-2002, page 86, item VIII.A.3)
These course will replace 5 credits of Music Electives and 3 credits of Music Literature Electives in the program, allowing the curriculum to stay at the same number of overall credit hours.
