Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The BS in Mathematics and Economics is an interdisciplinary major administered by the College of Arts and Sciences and offered jointly by the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Economics Department.  It has been an increasingly successful program since its inception on an experimental basis.  Besides meeting the goals set forth when it was first proposed and approved as a provisional program, the BS in Math and Economics has been a catalyst for collaboration between the two departments.  The goals of the Program were to provide a sound education to those students who desire a degree in Economics with a strong background in Mathematics.  In particular, students graduating with this degree should be well prepared for graduate studies in Economics.  Flexibility was built in, via appropriate choices of tracks within the Program, to prepare students for graduate studies in Mathematics as well.  It was true then, and it continues to be the case, that the workplace environment for economists is favorable to those with a stronger mathematical foundation.  On the other hand, mathematics students certainly benefit from substantial exposure to applied areas.

Since its first appearance in the 2000-2001 Catalog, the Program has graduated 17 students.  In 2005 the Department of Mathematical Sciences had 26 students graduating with bachelor degrees: 8 in Secondary Math Education (BA), 9 in Math and Economics (BS), 7 in Mathematics (BS), and 2 with a BA in Mathematics.  There are currently 34 students pursuing a BS in Math and Economics, 100 students in Math Education, 38 in the BS in Mathematics and 22 in the BA in Mathematics.  The number of students seeking that major has increased every year since 2000-2001.  In 2003-2004 two students in this major were awarded the Hutchinson Scholars Program award from the College of Business and Economics, one student received the Charles Lanier Economics Scholarship Award, one student received the Wolfe Scholarship for best junior in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and two students received the Rees Scholarship (a merit award) from the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  These awards corroborate the fact that excellent students have been attracted to the major.

The BS in Mathematics and Economics has been established with no additional cost to the University, and it attends both the needs of students as well as the national need to train future economists, specially those who plan on pursuing graduate studies in Economics.  It also adds to the opportunities for mathematics students to get substantial exposure to additional applied areas.  Although we have not kept track of all our graduates in this major, we know of one student who is working in the Bureau of Statistics (Department of Labor) and pursuing graduate studies at the University of Maryland, one student who is pursuing graduate studies at University of Pennsylvania, one student who went to Carnegie-Mellon for graduate studies, and another who is pursuing graduate studies at Georgetown University.

The program is working very well; students and the University only have to gain by its permanent status.
