Resolution for Preservation Studies
New Ph.D. Program
Whereas a need for a Doctor of Philosophy with an interdisciplinary major in Preservation Studies has been identified in a study conducted by a committee comprised of twelve faculty members and administrators from nine different departments at the University of Delaware from which this program is being proposed, and
Whereas only two other programs offering degrees in conservation research at the doctoral level similar to the interdisciplinary content of this proposed program are known to exist in the world with none in North America, and
Whereas an open hearing was held March 16, 2005, by the Faculty Senate Coordinating Committee on Education and Graduate Studies Committee with no challenges or objections being raised, and
Whereas the chairs or other faculty
members of Departments of Geology, Fine Art and Visual Communications, English,
University Museums, Mechanical Engineering, Anthropology, Geography, Disaster
Research, Art History, and University Library, all provided letters of support
for the proposed new degree and major, and
Whereas this new program, which will
draw its faculty from seventeen departments, centers, and programs within six
colleges, will be administered by the Center for Material Culture Studies
within the College of Arts and Sciences, be it therefore
Resolved that the Faculty Senate recommends that the Doctor of Philosophy in Preservation Studies be established on a provisional basis subject to review in the seventh year for permanent program approval.
