List program changes for curriculum revisions:

We wish to make minor changes in the description of “PRE-PROFESSIONAL SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND COGNITIVE AND LINGUISTIC SCIENCE”.  The purpose of these changes is to more accurately reflect the possibilities available to students.  The corrected prose follows:

Students who wish to prepare for graduate or professional work in Speech Pathology and Communication Disorders may follow a course of study drawing on linguistics, speech science, psychology, neuroscience, and biology. This will include courses in acoustics, physiology, psycholinguistics, normal and abnormal development, and a variety of other scientific and clinical fields. Those wishing to study Cognitive and Linguistic Science may follow a course of study integrating language, computing, and thinking: in particular, introductory courses in linguistics, computer science, and psychology; a formal foundations course to provide the requisite mathematical underpinnings; and courses in some area of specialization, such as language development, computational modeling, or mathematical and logical foundations of cognitive science. Students typically enroll in an existing Major and add a Minor in Linguistics or Cognitive Science, or they may wish to devise an individualized course of study under the B.A.L.S. Program.  Advisors will work with students individually to design courses of study appropriate to the students’ needs and the requirements of the fields.

The wording in the current catalog follows (wording copied from the on-line catalog):

PRE-PROFESSIONAL SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND COGNITIVE AND LINGUISTIC SCIENCE

Students interested in these areas may pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree. Templates of courses for each of these options are available from the Department. Advisors will work with students individually to design courses of study appropriate to the students’ needs and the requirements of the fields.

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum:

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None

Other affected units:

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Probably “none”, but we have consulted with the Cognitive Science Advisory Committee, which includes the chairs of Anthropology, Philosophy and Linguistics in addition to representatives of CIS and Education.

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The current description is somewhat misleading so we have corrected the factual errors in the revised prose.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
