Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

At present history majors must take a 3-credit course from among the following areas in history:  Asia, Africa, Latin America, Middle East or the Ancient World.” (p.134, Catalog).  We propose to drop ancient history from this list and thus to oblige history majors to have at least one course outside the sphere of Western Civilization, broadly defined.  Also, we believe that dropping ancient history will enhance the intellectual consistency of this group.  To ensure that history majors do not concentrate excessively on modern history, we wish to add a requirement that they take a 3-credit history course the content of which deals with the past before 1700.  Note that HIST 101, already a requirement for the major, will not defray this pre-1700 requirement.  This pre-1700 requirement will take the place of the catalog line that reads, “History course….3” (p. 135, Catalog).

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
