This form is a routing document for the approval of new and revised academic programs.  Page 2 will serve as an attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda.  Proposing department should complete form, attach as a cover page and forward to the college dean. Documentation should include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.  Proposals must arrive to the Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate by March 1.   Proposals received after this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog for that year.

a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

 

The German Major currently offers five different options. Those are:

Option I Language and Literature

Option II Civilization and Culture

Option III Period Studies

Option IV Area Studies

Option V Linguistics

 

A few years ago, these different options were created in order to offer students a broad variety of choices and concentrations. However, in reality this concept never worked. Students—and their advisors—found the different options confusing and unnecessary. The overwhelming majority of students thus choose option I, and the proposed new  one-size-fits-all-major” reflects this current practice. This major which maintains the same number of courses and credit hours makes excellent use of the existing courses, yet it also provides enough choice for students.

Prerequisites for GRMN 300-level work are any 200-level courses.

Prerequisites for GRMN 400-level work are any two 300-level courses.
