*****PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR FIFTH OPTION, APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND PEDAGOGY, IS TO BE RETAINED: IT WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE CHANGE WE ARE PROPOSING.*****

b.  Summary of program:

We propose to delete these FOUR specialized options and to replace them with a streamlined, “one size fits all” major.  The course offerings and requirements of the French Studies major will not change.  We have simply found that students are put off by the numerous options, which they find confusing and which are really more suited to a graduate program.  Our new major actually gives students more options and more freedom in organizing their course of study.  The proposed description of our new French Studies major as it should appear in the 2004-2005 UD catalog is as follows:

French Studies Major

13 courses (39 credits), as follows:

10 courses in French:

FREN211 (3)

Two of: FREN 301, 302, 355 (6)

Three of: FREN 3__, FREN 4__ (9)

One 400-level literature course (3)

Three additional 400-level courses (9)

Three courses (9 credits) may be taken from a wide selection:

FREN 2__, FREN 207, FREN 208, FREN 3__, FLLT 202 or any FLLT course

numbered 320-330; HIST 339, ARTH 339, POSC 441 (courses offered abroad). Extra-departmental courses: HIST 346 (Age of Louis XIV); HIST 347 (The French Revolution and Napoleon); ARTH 225 (Eighteenth Century Art); ARTH 227 (Modern Art I); ARTH 228 (Modern Art II).
