a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

 

The department would like to add a double major option and a major/minor option to the MA in Foreign Languages and Pedagogy (MAFLP). These options exist already in the MA in Foreign Languages and Literatures (MAFLL), but not in the MAFLP. Many

students in or considering entering this program have expressed the desire for such options. Increasingly, it is important for foreign language teachers (the prime population for the FLP) degree to have qualifications in more than one language. Adding these options would respond directly to the students’ expressed needs. The options as proposed for the FLP degree are modeled exactly on those existing already within the MAFLL.

Requirements for the Degree:

 

Single Major in Foreign Languages  and Pedagogy [existing]

 

Course work consists of 30 credits, including at least 15 in the major literature/language (French, German, Spanish) and 9 in foreign language pedagogy; the remaining 6 credits, chosen with the consent of the advisor, can be in these or related fields.

 

Course work for students planning to seek teacher certification as well as the degree consists of 34 credits, including 15 in the major language, 9 in foreign language pedagogy, and 10 in Education (EDUC 613, 614, 619, 430); these students must also pass a teacher competency test as established by the University Council on Teacher Education and must student teach.

 

Candidates must pass a written and oral comprehensive examination based on reading lists in the major literature and in foreign language pedagogy.

 

 

Major/Minor in Foreign Languages and Pedagogy [new]

 

Course work consists of 36 credits: 15 in the major literature/language, 9 in  pedagogy, 3 in major literature/language or pedagogy and 9 in the minor literature/language.

 

Double Major in Foreign Languages and Pedagogy [new]
