a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

The Spanish Faculty is initiating a change in the requirements for the degree: B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures: Spanish Studies to add an additional required course: Advanced Spanish Composition and Grammar I. Observation and testing of our Spanish Studies Majors has led us to the conclusion that nearly all students require further work to improve their basic skills in written and oral communication. Our goal is to graduate students with a high level of competence in the language. This course will improve the likelihood of our achieving this goal. The course will also enable students to improve their performance in other courses in their major at the 300 and 400 levels. This change in requirements will not add to the number of credits for the major because we are simply specifying another required course (3 credits) but we are reducing the student’s selection among various courses to complete the major from 3 courses for 9 credits to 2 courses for 6 credits. Thus, we have maintained the number of credits necessary for the Spanish Studies major at 39 to 42, depending upon the student’s option within the major.
