a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

The LAS major and minor program current play a growing, though at present, quantitatively small, role in the University’s curriculum.  Qualitatively, as the largest of the only three area studies major programs at the University of Delaware, it represents a critical part of the University’s objective to offer an international educational perspective.  LAS also provides a major resource to the growing Hispanic cultural presence, both in the University and the wider community in the state.  It thus serves to advance the University’s objectives for multi-cultural and multi-ethnic education.

For over thirty years, LAS has maintained a voluntary membership of some dozen or more Latin America- focused faculty who have presented a substantial core of course offerings.  The majors represents the principal focus of the effort to advance learning and knowledge about Latin America at the University.  The LAS committee respectively petitions the University Senate for permanent status for the Latin American Studies major.

b.  Summary of program:

This interdisciplinary program provides students with comprehensive training in Spanish language and literature as well as Latin American history, politics, geography, anthropology, and Portuguese.  In addition, all students are encouraged to attend a semester or winter session at a Latin American site.

Many career opportunities are open to students who major in Latin American Studies.  Because of their linguistic training and

in-depth knowledge of the area, graduates of the program often seek employment in government, including the foreign service,

international business and banking, and non-governmental organizations that work extensively in Latin America.  In addition,

graduates are well prepared to pursue advanced degrees either in Latin American Studies or in a particular discipline.

The complete major program is described at http://www.udel.edu/catalog/current/as/latinam/latinam.html
