a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

  1. Require a higher level of mathematical and statistical literacy consistent with the role of mathematics as a necessary tool for conducting basic economic analysis, and the importance of statistics in understanding and interpreting economic data. Currently a grade of D- or better is sufficient in all courses used to satisfy statistics and mathematics for the Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. The changes raise the minimum standard to C- in MATH114 or 115, and in both MATH201 and 202.
  2. Require all majors to take at least one 400 level economics elective that applies the material taught in the required intermediate micro (ECON 300 or 301) and macro (ECON 303) economic theory courses.. Currently many of our BS degree students satisfy the two 400 level economics elective requirement by taking the ECON 422/423 econometrics courses which present advanced techniques for analyzing economic data but do not place sufficient emphasis on applications of the material taught in intermediate micro and macro. The changes require that at least one 400 level economics elective not be an econometrics course.
  3. Two sets of courses (ECON311 and ECON411, and ECON344 and ECON444) have been added to the list of corresponding courses for which students cannot earn credit for both courses due to similar course content.

b.  Summary of program:

Other than the changes listed above, this revision involves no change in the existing Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
