Revised 04/23/01

The justification for changing the number of times the Preliminary Exam can be

taken is to avoid wasting the time of students who won't ever pass.

This is just a program change anyhow, but the catalog needs to reflect this

change.

Under  A. Departmental General Requirements, 3.  Preliminary Exam (last sentence).

REPLACE: “The preliminary exam may be taken at most three times.”

BY: “The preliminary exam may be taken at most two times.”

The justification for eliminating the Minor Requirement is that it used to be

a UD requirement but no longer  is, and CIS doesn't want it.

The justification for the PhD requirements to change the 12 hours to 6

is to place greater emphasis on early involvement in research, and,

to make that possible, to have less emphasis on course work.

Proposed Associated Catalog Changes:

On Page 290 of the current 2003 catalogue under A.  Departmental General Requirements, 1.  Course Work (near the end)

1.      REPLACE “Each candidate is required to complete a major and minor field of study based on a minimum of 12 additional credits beyond the master’s degree.  These 12 additional credits do not include the following courses:  CISC 666, CISC 866, CISC 868, CISC 969.  Normally, in meeting the University’s requirement for a major and a minor area, a candidate will be required by the adviser to complete more than 12 credits.”

2.      BY: “Each candidate is required to complete a minimum of 6 additional credits beyond the master’s degree.  The 6 additional credits do not include the following courses:  CISC 666, CISC 866, CISC 868, CISC 969.  Normally, in meeting the University’s requirement for a major  area, a candidate will be required by the adviser to complete more than 6 credits.”
