This form is a routing document for the approval of new and revised academic programs.  Page 2 will serve as an attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda.  Proposing department should complete form, attach as a cover page and forward to the college dean. Documentation should include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.  Proposals must arrive to the Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate by March 1.   Proposals received after this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog for that year.

a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

1.In most universities majors substantially identical to our "Computer and Information Science" major are called simply "Computer Science".  Prospective students often ask us, "What's the difference?"   Answer:  none at all.  The includion of "Information" in our title is an historical artifact, which now often confuses people.

2.Our newly created "Information Systems" major was approved last year and will begin accepting students next fall.  It relates to skills and knowledge needed to design, grow, manage large business information systems.  In contrast, the traditional computer science major more broadly emphasizes the theory and design of computer systems and software.

The distinction between these majors will be much clearer if the word "Information" is removed from the "Computer Science" major title.

We propose that the change apply to four existing program titles, so that we have:

  BA in Computer Science

  BS in Computer Science

  Honors BA in Computer Science

  Honors BS in Computer Science

b.  Summary of program:

The program is well established, and described in the catalog.  Here are a few summary words anyway:

Computer science is the study of the capabilities and limitations of computers and of algorithms.

Students learn how to program computers in several computational languages, how to use and contribute to software libraries of general purpose computational tools, how to design, analyze, implement, and test algorithms.  The application

of these skills and tþe associated knowldege in several major suh-areas is studied.  These areas include systems and applications programming,  networks, artificial intelligence, software engineering.
