a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

During the 1999-2000 academic year the undergraduate program in Biological Sciences was completely revamped.  In addition,

a new BS degree program (with a choice of two concentrations) was approved by the faculty (see pp. 97-98 in the 2002-2003

Undergraduate & Graduate Catalog).  It was a complete oversight at the time that we did not apply for an honors degree option

     for the new BS degree.

The rationale for requesting that students have the option to pursue an honors degree in the new BS program (Concentration in

Ecology and Organismic Biology) is that it is attracting some of our best undergraduates.  In fact, a Senior Thesis is a requirement.

Students apply for admission during the spring of their sophomore year.  The admissions requirements are listed on p. 97 of the

     Undergraduate & Graduate Catalog.

We propose no changes in the current curriculum.  We only propose to allow students to receive an honors BS degree.

b.  Summary of program:

The recipient must complete the following for the Honors BS degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Ecology and

Organismic Biology:  1.  All requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences.

                                       2. All of the University’s generic requirements for the Honors degree (see p. 43 of the 2002-2003

                                           Undergraduate & Graduate Catalog).
