Rationale for creation, revision, or
deletion:
NCATE, the national accreditation
agency on secondary mathematics education, pointed out two areas of weakness in
our program during their last review. One was the lack of content materials on
history of mathematics and the second was on insufficient coverage of
statistics.
We have addressed these two issues
by setting up two required courses: Math 308-History of Mathematical Ideas and
Math 450-Mathematical Statistics.
Math 401-Real Analysis, a formerly
required course is now placed as an optional course.
We'll petition to the College of
Arts and Science to have Math 308 considered as a Group B course for general
education.
Math 308 does fit the stated
guidelines as a course that covers the evolution of a scientific discipline in
diverse ethnic backgrounds through different ages.
b.
Summary of program:
Based on the change mentioned above,
there is a net increase of two credits in the set of compulsory courses.
If Math 308 can be recognized as a
group B course for general education, we'll have a decrease of one credit.
The minimum number of credits
required for graduation remains unchanged.
