List program changes for
curriculum revisions:
Changes are applied to the format of the department’s
Ph.D. examination. This is currently
divided into (1) major and (2) minor exams.
(1) Major exam: the exam will consist of a
written and an oral section. The focus
of the student’s preparation and of the exam will be a selection of broad areas
within the specific field of the student’s concentration. Both written and oral tests will refer to
these selected areas.
(2) Minor exam: This exam will be in
written form. The selected field for
this exam should be distinct from that of the major. As with the major, a selection of areas of
study will be determined in advance by the student in consultation with his/her
faculty advisor.
List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum:
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None
Other affected units:
(List other departments affected by this new or revised
curriculum. Attach permission from the
affected units. If no other unit is
affected, enter “None”)
None
Rationale:
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Changes were motivated by widespread dissatisfaction among
faculty and students with the form of the major field, primarily. The exam, as currently administered, was
regarded as not suited to the kinds of knowledge and critical thinking the
faculty wishes to test.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
