List program changes for curriculum revisions:

Student must take Art 130or Art 138 and receive a grade of “B” or better to be admitted to the minor.  The chair must approve the minor application on line before the student can be admitted to the minor.   The minor consists of 18 credits:

  1. Art 130 or Art 138 - 3credits (student takes this class before being admitted to minor, must receive a grade of B or better to be admitted). The student may then apply for the minor and enter with the Chairperson’s approval.

  1. 12 credits (four classes) on the 200, 300 or 400 level in painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics or photography concentrations.  Students may choose from one or more concentrations. Students must follow prerequisites for all courses.  Enrollment is based on class availability. Classes will not be guaranteed in any one area to complete the minor.  For example, if a student completes Photo 280, there is not a guarantee that Photo 380 will be available, instead the student must take a course that is available on the 200 level or take a 300 or 400 level course that he or she has completed the prerequisite for.

  1. 3 credits in Art History or Art Criticism course.

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

none

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The Art minor was not formally disestablished by the Faculty Senate. Rather, it was noted in the catalog beginning in 2002-2003 that “Applications are currently not being accepted to the minor in Art”.

The minor was suspended because of over enrollment and students enrolled in the minor just to take one art course and then dropped the minor.  The successful completion of Art 130 with a grade of “B” or better to enter the minor will help to eliminate over enrollment and students that aren’t committed to completing the minor.

The 12 credits of 200, 300 or 400 course requirements are will not be specific and students will have to take classes contingent upon availability. In the past students had trouble completing a minor because a specific course was not available, this open selection of courses will alleviate this problem.  The open selectiodn of courses will also support the department’s new direction of prompting cross disciplinary course work across all concentrations.
