Subject: Re: Art program problems
Ken,
I agree that all this is confusing; so let me try and
clarify what we
are proposing: the main concern of the faculty is to
eliminate the
requirement of Art 315 and to add this course to the pool of
electives
from which our majors can choose. Thus, the changes to which you refer
come out of that impetus.
1. Regarding the
BFA-we propose eliminating Art 315 as a requirement
and in its place requiring an extra Art History course, thus
increasing
the number of credits in Art History from 9 to 12. We are also
proposing increasing the number of elective credits in art
courses from
9 to 12. In order to
do that we reduced the number of Group A
requirements from 9 to 6.
The Arts and Science College Senate Committee
asked the same question that you have regarding our ability
to change a
college requirement and upon checking with the A&S
Dean's Office, we
discovered that if this was the BA program, we could not
make this
change; but since we are dealing with the BFA program, we
can. The end
result is that the total number of course credits in the
major remains
the same.
2. Regarding the BA,
we propose eliminating Art 315 as a requirement
and in its place requiring an extra Art History course. Thus the
requirement in Art History goes from 9 to 12 credits. We are also
proposing the addition, not the elimination, of 3 more
credits of art
electives, from 9 to 12 credits. This results in a net gain of 3
credits for the BA.
3. I will contact
Ann Gibson and ask her to send me a letter stating
that the Department of Art History can accomodate the
additional
students.
Best Regards,
Suzanne
