List program changes for
curriculum revisions:
The Department proposes 4 minor revisions: (1) add ENWC 165 New Student Seminar (1 credit) as a requirement under Professional Studies; (2) add ENWC 444 Conservation of Tropical Biodiversity and ENWC 452 Conservation of African Wildlife to Professional Studies Group I; (3) add ENWC 450 Debates in Conservation Biology and ENWC 453 Community-based Conservation to Professional Studies Group III; and (4) add ENWC 305 Entomology Laboratory to Group I .
List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum:
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”) NONE
ENWC 452 Conservation of African Wildlife
ENWC 453 Community-based Conservation
Other affected units:
(List other departments affected by this new or revised
curriculum. Attach permission from the
affected units. If no other unit is
affected, enter “None”) NONE
Rationale:
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
(1)Addition of ENWC 165 will guarantee that all first-year students have this freshman experience. It does so through classes and activities that acquaint students with various University services, academic skills, and potential career areas. The course has been strongly encouraged for all freshmen entomology majors in their first fall for over 10 years to enhance retention of students, and all have taken it in those years.
(2 and 3) ENWC 444 and 450 are
taught in association with Study Abroad trips to Costa Rica while 452 and 453
have been taught experimentally once in Tanzania and will become regular
courses there. Listing them as acceptable choices for the groups will make
official what has been our practice, clear up confusion among students, and
eliminate the need to acknowledge repeatedly that they are acceptable.
(4) Adding ENWC 305 Entomology Laboratory to Group I is a clerical correction; the course was accidentally deleted in a previous curriculum revision.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
