Revised 04/23/01
October 17, 2002
TO: Professor Kenneth Koford
Chair, Undergraduate Studies Committee
FROM: Donald L. Sparks, Chair
Department of Plant and Soil Sciences
SUBJECT: Permanent Status for Major in Plant
Biology
On behalf of our faculty, I am requesting that permanent status be
granted to our Plant Biology major. This
major was initiated in 1997 and
approved for students enrolling in the fall
of 1998. The addition of
this major allowed students to have a
clearly defined program focusing
on the plant biological sciences. The
academic rigor is such that it
facilitates entry into the job market and
graduate programs that
emphasize plant molecular biology,
physiology, botany or plant
pathology.
Starting in the fall of 1998, we had 12 Plant Biology majors. Most
of these students changed their major from
the broader based Plant
Science major. Enrollments for subsequent
falls were 21 in 1999, 20 in
2000 and eight for 2001 and 2002. In the
major we graduated five
students in 2000, eight in 2001 and two in
2002. We also currently have
15 students enrolled in the Plant Biology
minor, a potential source for
new majors.
We have been pleased with the quality of the students drawn to this
major. The number of majors is currently not
as high as we can
accommodate. To increase majors, there is an
enhanced plant biology
recruiting program recently initiated at the
College dean level. In
addition, at our departmental retreat this
coming February a major item
for discussion will be how can we best
recruit students for the Plant
Biology major. It should also be noted that,
in 2001, The Academic
Program Review Report stated that the Plant
Biology major has an updated
curriculum which makes the major enticing
for undergraduates. We hope to
take advantage of this assessment in our
recruiting efforts.
Since the major was approved, our department has added three new
junior faculty and an endowed chair full professor
in the plant biology
area. These faculty also have appointments
and are housed in the
Delaware Biotechnology Institute. This new
state-of-the-art laboratory
will offer our students facilities in which
to engage in undergraduate
research. All of the new faculty will be
active in the Department's
teaching efforts and will make sure all
required courses are taught on a
regular basis.
We will appreciate your committee's consideration of our request.
