Revised 04/23/01

FROM: Donald L. Sparks, Chair
Department of Plant and Soil Sciences
SUBJECT: Permanent Status for Major in Landscape
Horticulture
On behalf of our faculty, I am requesting permanent status be
granted to our Landscape Horticulture major.
The major was initiated in
1997 and approved for students enrolling in
the fall of 1998. The
previously offered Ornamental Horticulture
concentration within the
Plant Science major served as the starting
point for developing the
major. During the evolution of the major,
input was solicited from all
department faculty and selected employers
and alumni.
Starting in the fall of 1998, we had 33 Landscape Horticulture
majors. Most of these students changed their
academic program from the
Plant Science Ornamental Horticulture
concentration to the new major.
Enrollments for subsequent falls were 43 in
1999, 43 in 2000 and 48 in
2001. For the fall of this academic year, 44
students are majors. The
number of students graduating in the major
was one in 1999, four in
2000, seven in 2001 and nine in 2002. We
also currently have 15 students
in the Landscape Horticulture minor, a
potential source of new majors.
We have been pleased with the quality of the students in the major.
Several majors have completed Degrees with
Distinction and have received
other University academic honors. All
students must complete a
major-related internship. The industry
internship sponsors, and after
graduation employers, have been very
satisfied with the academic
preparation of our students.
Recent graduates are surveyed by the Academic Dean if the College
every year. The average employment statistics
for the last four years of
Landscape Horticulture graduates show that
48% were employed by a major
related industry, six percent by a unrelated
industry, 23% entered
graduate school, eight percent worked in
public government, eight
percent were self employed and seven percent
were either unemployed or
not seeking employment.
The Landscape Horticulture major meets all of the academic
requirements for our students to become
Certified Professional
Horticulturists. This professional
certification is administered by the
American Society for Horticultural Science.
In 2001, the Academic Program Review Board noted in their report
that the Landscape Horticulture major has
updated curricula and is an
enticing major for undergraduates.
We are proud of our Landscape Horticulture major. It has attracted
good quality students in satisfactory
numbers. Majors are advised and
taught by dedicated faculty and all required
courses in our department
are taught every academic year. We will
continue to fine tune this major
as part of the agenda for our departmental
retreat in February 2003.
We will appreciate your committee's consideration of our request.
