            none

Other affected units:

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

            none

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The Statistics major has not been serviced for a number of years on campus.  Following the move of statistics to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 1999, the major was reinstated by the Provost’s Office.  The Statistics Program was urged to either drop this major since we were no longer servicing it, or revise the major and open it to new students.  Since we were beginning to see new students interested in statistics, we sought to revise the major.  We found that we could service this major without adding any new courses. Instead, we rebuilt the major around existing courses in FREC.   The bulk of the changes in this major reflect modifications that make it consistent with all other majors in the CANR.  No additional courses were added from Math or Computer Science and thus would not reflect a demand for new courses.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)

Statistics is the science of data - the collection, management, analysis

and interpretation of data. Statistical methodology is used in virtually

every professional field as a way to conduct research and make important

decisions. These include the pure sciences such as biology, chemistry

and physics, as well as engineering, business, and the social sciences

(economics, political science, psychology, and sociology).   The

Statistics Major is based on a combination of a core set of theoretical

and methods courses in statistics, as well as opportunities for taking

courses in fields of application. The core course work is designed to

prepare students for advanced study in statistics by emphasizing a

foundation in probability and mathematical statistics, as well as

courses in statistical methods such as design and regression.  Students

also will take courses that build an area of statistical application.

The area of application may well be a minor or a second major.
