Submitted by:  Charles E. Mason, phone number 831-8888

Effective term:  05F

Current degree Ph.D.

Proposed change leads to the degree of: Ph.D.

Proposed name: N/A

Revising or Deleting:

Graduate Program Policy statement change: See attached document for complete policy with highlighted changes.

Graduate Program of Study: Entomology and Applied Ecology: Ph.D.

List program changes for curriculum revisions:

1.  Under admission requirements, add the Advance GRE in Biology is required with a minimum score of 580 for Ph.D. applicants.

2.  In the section Doctor of Philosophy Requirements under Qualifying Examination add the following after the second sentence:

“The examination shall include questions to evaluate basic competence in biology, ecology, and statistics as well as advanced knowledge in the designated major and ancillary areas.  The examination areas, examiners for each of the areas, and pertinent review materials will be identified by the committee and communicated in writing by the major advisor to the student no later than the end of the second semester.”

3.  At the end of the policy, add the statement “Students are responsible for being familiar with the University of Delaware Academic Regulations for Graduate Students published in the Graduate Catalog.”

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum: None

Other affected units: No other units will be affected.

Rationale:

1.  Previously we state in our admission requirements that the advanced GRE in Biology is required for PhD applicants, but we did not stated a minimum score.  We are proposing that we specify a minimum score of 580, which is at approximately the 35th percentile of the tested population.

2.  We are designating three basic competency areas in our field for the Ph.D. qualifying examination, which were implied before, but not specified.

3.  We want to ensure that students are responsible for reading the University Academic Regulations for Graduate Students.  We had some cases where students were not familiar with registration requirements, application for advanced degree, leave of absence policy, and etc.

Program Requirements:

Current catalog text:

The Advanced GRE in Biology is required for Ph.D. applicants, and it is strongly recommended for M.S. applicants.

Proposed new text:

The Advanced GRE in Biology is required with a minimum score of 580 for Ph.D. applicants, and it is strongly recommended for M.S. applicants.
