a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

Among the recommendations from our departmental advisory committee in 2002 was to seek a department name that described the department’s programs and direction better than the current one. In response, the faculty has chosen to change from Entomology and Applied Ecology to Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, which it believes meets the review team’s criterion.

By replacing  “applied” with “wildlife," we replace an ambivalent term with one that better captures the spirit and content of our largest undergraduate major -- wildlife conservation. We chose to retain “ecology” in our name because it captures a major theme of our undergraduate and graduate instructional programs as well as of our faculty research. Together, “wildlife” and “ecology” reflect areas that we intend to develop further in the future. Even though insects are wildlife, we retain “entomology” in our name because the taxonomic focus for most of our graduate students and faculty is Insecta. We also need to identify the location of the very important entomological programs and personnel of Cooperative Extension.

Adding “wildlife” and retaining “ecology”  will make it easier for potential undergraduates and graduate students to locate our programs in wildlife and ecology both in University of Delaware publications and in web searches. Finally, “wildlife ecology” instead of “wildlife conservation” retains the important keyword, ecology, for reasons expressed above while also reflecting the undergraduate wildlife major.

b.  Summary of program:

The Department has 3 programmatic themes-- Organismic Biology, Conservation of Biodiversity, and Human Interactions with Other Species. These themes capture undergraduate and graduate majors, curricula, course offerings, our research, and Extension efforts. They also show where we plan to focus our efforts in the future.
