Calvin,

I got a quick response from everyone and they agree that your request will have a minimal impact on Biological Sciences. Thus our department will support your request.

Subject: Animal Science Requirements

Dave,

I had mentioned to you in passing that our department wanted to make a change in our requirements that would involve BISC306 General Physiology.  Out of our ~300 majors about 100 are in the General Animal Science and Applied Animal Science concentrations (the bulk are prevet).  As it currently stands, these two concentrations require a physiology course.  By far the majority of the students take ANSC441 Reproductive Physiology or ANSC445 (formerly ANSC345) Reproductive Physiology.  Taking an animal science course also helps complete the 30 credits they need to take in the major.  What we would like to propose is that students also have the option of taking BISC306 to satisfy the physiology requirement.  The new recommendation is listed below and I have attached the complete checklist as an attachment.

One course from the following:       3

ANSC 441 Reproductive Physiology of Domestic Animals

ANSC 442 Lactational Physiology

ANSC 445        Comparative Physiology of Domestic Animals

BISC306   General Physiology

I would expect no more than 5-10 students to enroll in BISC306 to satisfy the requirement as ANSC441 is an extremely popular course.  So, I am hereby requesting permission from Biology to make this modification to our general animal science and applied animal science concentrations.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks.

Calvin

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

  1. The “physiology” requirement has been modified to reflect a change in course number and to provide students with more options.
  2. The “production” requirement has been modified by the addition of an additional course to provide students with more options.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
