Vacation and Travel
What is the difference between “vacation” and “travel?”
Students who go on vacation are those who plan to:
- Take a break from the ELI for one or two months while staying in the United States; AND
- Will return to the ELI after they have finished their vacation.
Students who travel are those who plan to:
- Travel outside of the USA for any period of time; OR
- Travel inside of the USA for less than 1 month. Students who travel will return to the ELI after they have finished their travels.
Vacation
Students who have studied at the ELI for at least four sessions without a break are eligible to take a vacation for up to two months within the USA.
If you plan to take a vacation within the USA, please download and complete the Vacation Form. The completed Vacation Form must be submitted to the ELI Admissions Office at least two weeks before the end of the session.
Students who go on vacation MUST pay one-half of the tuition PLUS insurance and clinic fees before leaving.
Vacation Forms will normally be processed during the second-last week of the session. When your Vacation Form is ready for pick-up, you will receive an e-mail from the ELI Admissions Office.
If you have questions about the Vacation Form, please contact the ELI Admissions Office at ud-eli@udel.edu or visit a counselor during Admissions Office Hours.
Travel
If you plan to travel while you are an ELI student, you must obtain authorization from the ELI Admissions Office. Remember, the best time to travel is always the period between ELI sessions. Here are some easy steps for you to follow as you make your travel plans:
- Before purchasing your tickets, be sure that you will not miss any classes. Remember, your visa status requires that you follow ELI attendance policies.
- Download and complete the ELI’s Travel Form.
- If you need to miss classes to travel, both of your teachers must sign the bottom of your travel form. If you will not miss your classes, your teachers will not need to sign your form.
- Submit your travel form to the ELI Admissions Office at least 10 days before you travel. The Admissions Office will normally take one day to process your travel form.
- One day after you have submitted your travel form, check your e-mail. The ELI Admissions Office will send you an e-mail message either telling you that your form is ready for pick-up OR that there is a problem with your form.
- If your form is ready for pick-up, you may collect it in the student mailboxes at the ELI main building.
- After you have picked-up your Travel Form, you must take it AND your I-20/DS-2019 form to UD’s Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS). This must be done at least one week before your departure, as OISS must have time to prepare your I-20/DS-2019 for travel.
Do you have a question about your travel? Contact the ELI Admissions Office by e-mail at ud-eli@udel.edu or make an appointment to see a counselor during Admissions Office Hours.
