Public School English as a Second Language Instruction

Since 1988 the ELI has provided English as a Second Language instruction for children who are English Language Learners within the Christina School District. The program addresses grades K through 6, and operates at multiple school sites throughout the District. This successful program is a collaborative effort on the part of the University of Delaware and the Christina School District, and includes training of mainstream teachers on ESL issues as well as student training in language, academics, and cultural orientation.

Children in the high school ESL programs operated by the School District (Newark High School, Glasgow High School, and Christiana High School), age 16 or more, are eligible to participate in ELI's summer pre-academic ESL programs at the significantly discounted in-state tuition rate The summer program is an excellent opportunity for English Language Learners to improve their Academic English skills, experience life on a university campus, and prepare themselves for the rigors of college study.
