TEACHING LISTENING COMPREHENSION
workshop

Three teachers describe the stages they go through to teach a listening comprehension lesson.

Teacher A:

I read the passage or play the tape once or twice and ask comprehension questions. Then I ask SS to read the text aloud to correct their pronunciation.

Teacher B:

I usually start by presenting a few lexical items. Then I play the tape twice and ask detailed questions about the text. The SS open their books and do some vocabulary or grammar exercises.

Teacher C:

I usually start with a warm up to set the context. The SS listen first for the gist, they listen a second time to answer more detailed questions. Then I use the text as a springboard to another skill task.

TASK 1: Which of the three teachers do you agree with? Justify your choice.
TASK 2: Select lesson 24 from ‘English for Everyday Activities’ and devise a lesson plan for a 9th grade class, consisting of 3 stages: pre-listening/while listening/post- listening. Each group will have to work on one stage.
TASK3: Use the text as a springboard to another skill task.
