Three ESL Faculty Positions
The University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI), part of the College of Education and Public Policy, invites applications from outstanding ESL professionals to fill three full time continuing temporary faculty positions, effective March 1, 2010. The ELI is well respected among IEPs, in large part because it attracts talented and creative faculty members who are committed to supporting students in meeting their linguistic and cross-cultural goals and to pursuing excellence in their teaching, scholarship, and service. We retain such faculty by offering excellent opportunities for professional growth and advancement, competitive salaries, a rich benefit package, access to extensive University resources, and a supportive and collaborative work environment (see www.udel.edu/eli/professionalgrowth for more information).
The ELI offers a wide variety of courses and programs, including: EAP, Business English, English for Professionals, English Through American Culture, Legal English, EFL Teacher Training, ITA training, and instruction for English Language Learners in the public schools. One of the hallmarks of the ELI is its Tutoring Center, which provides free private tutoring to support classroom instruction. More information about the ELI is available at www.udel.edu/eli.
Qualifications: Applicants must meet the educational requirements set by the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) for core IEP faculty, i.e., have a master’s degree in either Teaching English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics with coursework in the following areas: culture and society, second language acquisition, second-language/TESL pedagogy, second-language assessment, and language teaching practicum.
For two of the positions, candidates must have the following:
- a minimum of three years of post-master’s classroom experience in an IEP;
- evidence of significant professional activity and accomplishments;
- strong written and oral communication; and
- demonstrated excellence in teaching multiple levels and skill areas.
For one position, in addition to meeting the qualifications described above, the successful candidate will possess:
- ten or more years experience in an IEP;
- an established reputation as a presenter and author in the field; and
- experience and expertise to bring leadership to standing faculty committees in such areas as curriculum, assessment, and technology.
This individual may be hired at the rank of assistant professor, subject to the approval of the ELI faculty.
In brief, the Institute is seeking three exceptional ESL professionals who can contribute to further strengthening the program’s reputation as a leader in teaching, service, and scholarship.
Specializations: To meet current and future ELI instructional and programmatic needs, candidates must demonstrate substantial expertise in at least one of the following areas of specialization:
- English for Academic Purposes
- Curriculum Development
- Computer Assisted Instruction and Distance Learning
- Teacher Training
- Business English
- Second language assessment
Applicants should use their cover letter to highlight areas of their curriculum vitae that demonstrate requisite areas of expertise.
Workload responsibilities: The individual workload for all full time faculty members follows the Institute’s approved faculty workload agreement (see “workload” at www.udel.edu/eli/facbook for more details).
- Teaching:
The standard administered teaching load for full time non-tenure track faculty members averages two class preparations per day (16.2 hours per week). All full time, non-tenure track faculty members are expected to advise students and to participate in other teaching-related duties such as attendance at department functions (e.g., meetings, retreats, special program events), participation in curricular planning, course development and course materials, and presentations of teaching-related materials at conferences (e.g., TESOL, NAFSA, regional TESOL). In accordance with the University of Delaware Faculty Handbook, the ELI Director will administer the teaching load for full time faculty members to stimulate their scholarship, help them meet service requirements, and provide opportunities for professional growth. Special assignments, such as supervising student teachers or coordinating major programs will result, either in a reduced teaching load or supplemental compensation.
- Service: Service to the Institute, college, and University is required of all full time faculty members. General service obligations include participation in faculty governance and in the effective development and conduct of the English Language Institute programs. Faculty members generally serve on two standing committees within the ELI, though this may vary depending on the roles and responsibilities within given committees. Examples of additional specific service activity include testing students, coordinating graduation ceremonies, and participation in field trips.
- Scholarship: ELI faculty are encouraged, but not required, to pursue original scholarship and publication. Many of our faculty members have worked to reinforce the Institute’s national reputation for excellence by showcasing instructional innovation at national and international conferences. Faculty members may request to incorporate time spent on summer research into their overall percentage distribution of their workload.
Submission and Review Process: The search is being conducted by a committee comprised of five faculty members. Applicants should submit, electronically, a cover letter, references, curriculum vitae, one sample lesson plan (maximum 3 pages) and a one-page summary of evaluations/observations of your teaching by colleagues or supervisors ( for the last three years) by October 31, 2009 to: elifacultysearch@udel.edu -- Attn: Mary Beth Worrilow, Chair, Faculty Search Committee.
Those candidates that qualify will be contacted by November 30, 2009 to submit a brief packet of information consisting of the following items:
- data from recent IEP course evaluations
- written observations of your teaching by colleagues or supervisors
- two sample lesson plans
- descriptions or syllabi of one or two courses you designed or developed
This packet is not a formal dossier and should not exceed fifteen pages. The closing date for submissions of the packet is December 15, 2009. Electronic submissions are preferred. All materials will be shared with departmental faculty. In the event you wish to use a postal service, submissions may be sent to:
