Marcia Peoples Halio, Assistant Professor, began her career in the Writing Center of the University of Delaware (1975-85), where she tutored remedial English, helped students write dissertations and theses, and taught ESL to refugees from the Vietnam War, the Cultural revolution in China, and the overthrow of the Shah of Iran. From 1985-2005, she taught full-time in the UD’s Writing Program and for 12 years she trained and supervised TAs and supplemental faculty. She also published several textbooks including Writing on the Internet: Finding a Voice Online (Harcourt Brace, 1999), and Writing with WordPerfect (Harper-Collins, 1995). In addition, she developed an online version of E110 for the Focus Program in Distance Education and published numerous articles about teaching, including “International Students’ Difficulties with Writing” (Ch. 9 in Understanding the International Student, NY: Mc-Graw Hill, 1992: 119-137) and “Writing for International Readers,” (College Teaching 37.4 (1989): 131-34).
In 2005, Marcia retired from the English Department and took students to Ireland and New Zealand for International Programs. She’s now enjoying teaching English for Academic Purposes at the ELI.
