ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
PROCEDURE FOR CHANGING CLASSES

For students who are mis-placed in classes, change of class or level is permitted during the first week of the session. Changes should be made only in those cases where it is clear that the student has been mis-placed. Changes will be made during the faculty meeting normally held on the first Friday of the session. A teacher who feels that a student is mis-placed should talk with that student about changing classes.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHERS: Teachers complete a Class Transfer Request Form for each student who requests to change his/her class. Teachers must sign the form and indicate whether the move is a promotion request or a lateral move request. These forms must be given to Joe Matterer by 12:30 on the day of testing. Students should never be given the forms. The forms must be brought to the ELI by a teacher and placed in my mailbox. Please don't rely on students to do this. Generally the students present the form just before the start time and we are unprepared for them.

No student will be admitted to testing unless the class transfer request form has been received Joe by 12:30 on the day of testing. Please no not combine both L/S and R/W changes on the same form.

  1. Promotion Requests:
    1. New students wishing to change levels
      • take the Michigan Aural to change L/S levels .
      • take the reading test for their present level and complete an in-class essay to change R/W levels.
    2. Continuing students wishing to change L/S levels take the Michigan tests only if they did not take the test at the end of the previous session. Test proctors will not admit students who were recently tested. Promoted continuing students wishing-to change R/W levels must take a reading test to be considered.
  2. Lateral Move Requests: Students wishing to move laterally, i.e. to another section of the same level (IIIA to IIID, for example) or to another of the multileveled advanced special classes (see below) do not need to take the tests. However, the teacher must complete the class transfer request form and give it to Joe Matterer by 12:30 on the day of testing.

Please inform the students of the procedures and of the test times and places. This information is in your 'First Day Memo'. Level the required essay and bring it with you to the meeting on Friday. Students who do not complete the procedure outlined above may not make changes, and changes are discouraged after the first week.
