Hello Lowell!

Today, two years ago, I was writing to you to say sorry about the terrorist attack of New York. Today, The U.S. commemorates 9/11 tragedies. In that day, many victims of the world died on the world trade center. Many innocent people. Terrorism is not the way to solve a conflict. My pour Colombia suffers terrorism everyday. Carbombings, kidnapping, etc. The only way to stop terrorism is to help the poor people. And not to buy drugs. If the american people that buys drugs, knew that they are killing people of colombia when they are buying drugs they stop buying it. The United States is a strong country and survived that attack. Colombia is a poor country and not strong, and receives attacks from the terrorists everyday. This is a part of a common lives. And the people of colombia is tired of that. Afourtunately, we have a good and strong president that fights the guerrillas.

I hope that this episode of history never came back. I hope every nation of the world fights for peace.

And I hope colombia and the united states can find their peace.

regards,

juan milllán, AN ELI STUDENT 1988

Dear Dr. Stevens:

My name is Denis Bishogo Mushagalusa, I'm from Zaire now Democratic Republic of Congo. I attended the ELI in 1982 -- 1983 and I was lucky to have you as one of my teachers with Mr Lowell, Mrs Noriko, Mr Dean.

I want to thank you for all you gave me.

Now I' m married and father of five wonderful kids. I' m a successful businessman dealing in Import and Export thanks to the English I learned at the ELI.

I would like to remind you that two of my younger brothers also studied at the ELI. I'm the one who designed the logo of ELI. I will be very pleased to hear from you.

[Dr. Stevens replies]

Dear Denis,

Thanks so much for your note. Did you really think I had forgotten you or that you designed our T-shirt? Never! In fact, we still use your design. Your shirt is now the ELI honors t-shirt. We only give it to student graduating with "A" averages in their grades. Every session, our students work hard to earn a shirt, and the awarding of the honors shirt, is perhaps the most important part of our graduation ceremony. In fact a great deal of mythology surrounds the shirt. Each graduation, I tell stories of amazingly wonderful things that happen to the recipients and wearers of the shirt, such as, being given choice seating in restaurants, being upgraded to first class on airlines, being asked to give advice on important international issues -- all because they are recognized as UDELI honors students. As you can see, we have a lot of fun with it. So your shirt has become legend at the ELI! This year, we are planning to update and revise the shirt, but we will still keep your original design. You are a legend here, Denis.

I'm glad to hear that you have been blessed with much success. I hope your brothers have been equally successful. Please come visit us sometime. We have a new home for the ELI. Give us your address, so we can send you a new t-shirt.

All the best,
Scott S.
