The Benefits of an ELI Education

Improve your language skills!

  • You will have approximately 28 hours of instruction each week! ELI students have a combination of class meetings with highly qualified ESL instructors, private tutoring, and time in our Listening Laboratory and Self-Access Learning Center.
  • You will have a private tutor! The ELI is one of only a small number of ESL programs in the USA that includes private tutoring as a core part of its program at no extra charge!
  • You will be in courses that are right for your level of English skills! The ELI offers 6 levels of instruction, from “beginner” to “high advanced.” On the first day of school, you will take a placement exam to determine your English level.

Receive a certificate when you finish your program!

  • ELI students who have met the requirements of their program participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate at the end of their session.
  • The certificate includes dates of study and highest level achieved and is signed by the President and Provost of the University.

Gain acceptance into an ELI partner university with no TOEFL exam through our Conditional Admissions Program (CAP)!

  • The ELI has agreements with several colleges and universities that help qualified students to be accepted without the need for a TOEFL score!

Develop the academic English skills you will need to be successful in your university degree studies in the States!

  • You can earn credit at the University of Delaware for ELI courses!
  • Students who achieve a grade of ‘A’ in one session of English for Academic Purposes Level VI Reading & Writing Class or grades of ‘B’ in two sessions of English for Academic Purposes Level VI Reading & Writing Class earn three credits for the UD Freshman English class, E110. These students are then exempted from the UD E110 class.

Prepare yourself for an MBA at a US university!

  • The ELI’s Pre-MBA program helps to prepare international students for admission and successful study in MBA programs in the United States.

Take part time credit courses at UD!

  • High level ELI students may request permission to enroll in a 3 credit undergraduate class during the Fall (September – December) or Spring (February – May) sessions
