homestay families
Homestay Coordinator Nancy Purcell (fourth from right) welcomed Shoin University students and their homestay families at ELI

How thrilling would it be to experience another culture right in your own home? If you have ever hosted an international student, then you know how truly exciting the Homestay and Host Family programs are. They give American families the opportunity to "travel" to distant lands, experience new cultures, taste some exotic dishes and appreciate foreign customs, without even leaving the house!

The Homestay and Host Family programs match ELI students with American families. Students can choose to live with a family while they study or simply get together with families occasionally to share a meal, celebrate a tradition or just hang out for the evening. Both programs are mutually rewarding for students and American families. Some families enjoy it so much they host two or more students at a time.

These programs, under the direction and guidance of Nancy Purcell and Anne Rodgers, have grown in popularity this past year. Currently, there are 150 host families who voluntarily open their hearts and homes in welcoming ELI students for an occasional get-together. Since last year, 200 students have participated in the Host Family program.

In addition, 80 students lived with 50 Homestay Families during the course of the year. Some were long-term stays, up to eight months, and some were only for one or two months.

"Whether long or short," said Purcell, "the memories are everlasting."
