Safety Educational Requirements
Biosafety Training: Initial
Biosafety training is offered via the
EHS Online Training Program and staff presentation. This training
is required for all persons working in labs with biological materials.
Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Annual
This training is offered via the EHS Online Training
Program and staff presentation. This
training is required for persons covered by OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens
Standard. It requires initial training prior to exposure and annually
thereafter.
Chemical Hygiene Training: Annual
This training can be offered by staff presentation or by the
researcher’s supervisor or principal investigatr. It is also offered via
the EHS Online Training
Program. This training is
required for all persons working in research laboratories. This training
should cover the specific hazards and required protective measures for the
chemicals used by a researcher. Initial training is required prior to
working with hazardous chemicals and whenever a new process, experiment or
chemical is introduced or at least annually. Go to

Chemical Waste Training: Annual
This training is offered in multiple formats; including the EHS Online Training
Program,
PowerPoint, and staff presentation. This training is required for persons
who generate chemical waste. It requires initial training prior to
generating waste and annually thereafter.
Confined Space
Training: Periodic
This training is provided by Environmental Health and Safety staff
presentation. Persons entering or attending a confined space entry must
be trained prior to participation. Refresher training should be provided
annually.
CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator and
First Aid:
These training courses are provided by Environmental Health and Safety
staff presentation.
Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
Training: Biannual
Those persons trained in the use of the AED through AHA are certified for
a two year period. This is a four hour class that teaches participants
how to use the AED. Use of the AED, in combination with CPR greatly
increases an adult cardiac arrest victim's change of survival.
Recertification is recommended.
CPR Training: Biannual
Those persons trained in CPR through AHA are certified for a two year
period. This is a four to six hour class, depending on discipline that
trains a participant in Adult, Child and Infant CPR and Chocking.
Recertification is recommended.
First Aid Training: Biannual
Those persons trained in First Aid through AHA are certified for a two
year period. This is an eight hour class that trains an individual in
basic first aid. Recertification is recommended.
DOT Dry Ice Shipping Training: Biannual
This training is offered in the EHS Online Training Program. This training is
required for all persons who want to ship materials on dry ice.
Ergonomics at the Computer Workstation: Elective
A self-paced computer training program called ErgoSmart is offered at
ErgoSmart
Software . Training is also offered by staff presentation upon
request.
This training is designed to reduce the risk of repetitive motion
disorders for workers who spend 2+ hours per day at the
computer.
Fume Hood Training: Initial
This training is offered in multiple formats; including PowerPoint
for use in department presentations, and by Environmental Health & Safety
staff presentation. This course is recommended for all personnel and
students who will use a fume hood or other specialized laboratory
ventilation.
Hydrofluoric Acid Refresher Training: Annual
This training is offered in the EHS Online Training Program and by Environmental Health
and
Safety staff presentation. This training is required for all persons who
are using Hydrofluoric Acid.
Laser Safety Training: Initial
This training is offered by Environmental Health and Safety staff
presentation. This training is required for all workers prior
to the use of Class 3B and 4 lasers.
New Employee Orientation: Initial
This training is offered in multiple formats; including Powerpoint,
and by Environmental Health & Safety staff presentation. This
introduction to safety is available to all new members of the campus
community to introduce them to the University safety program.
New Graduate
Student Orientation: Initial
This training is offered in multiple formats; including the EHS Online Training
Program,
Powerpoint for use in department presentations, and by Environmental Health
& Safety staff presentation. This
introduction to safety is required for all new graduate students and is
available to all new members of the campus community to introduce them to
the University safety program.
Powered Industrial
Trucks Safety Training: Initial
and Refresher every 3 Years
In accordance with the OSHA standard, all personnel who utilize
powered industrial trucks must receive initial safety training
prior to the use of the equipment and periodic refresher safety
training every three years. Certain incidents require immediate
retraining. These incidents are:
- The operator has been observed to operate the vehicle in an unsafe
manner.
- The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
- The operator has received an evaluation that reveals that the operator
is not operating the truck safely.
- The operator is assigned to drive a different type of truck.
- A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect
safe operation of the truck.
Initial and refresher training is provided by Occupatioanl Health
and Safety and includes:
- Classroom instruction on the proper use of forklifts, man-lifts, and
pallet trucks;
- Viewing a training DVD which explains the proper lifting capacity,
dangers
of improper use, completing inspections, providing hazard communication
and choosing the right industrial truck for the task;
- Performance evaluation of each operator on the use of a forklift and
pallet lift truck to assess the operator's ability to maneuver a load
around obstacles in a safe manner.
Radiation Safety Training: Annual
This training is offered by Environmental Health & Safety staff
presentation. Initial Radiation Safety Training is required prior to the
use of radioactive materials and annually thereafter.
Respirator Training: Annual
This training is offered by Environmental Health & Safety staff
presentation. This training is required for all persons wearing
respiratory protection. The training is done initially accompanied by
respirator fit testing. Refresher training should be performed annually.
Right-to-Know Training: Annual
This training is offered in multiple formats; including the EHS Online Training
Program,
Powerpoint, and by Environmental Health & Safety staff presentation.
Right-to-Know training is offered in two levels; Right-to-Know Basic which
covers non-laboratory workers and students who do not work with chemical
waste and Right-to-Know Advanced training for those students who make
decisions and work with chemical waste.
X-Ray Device Safety Training: Initial
This training is offered by Environmental Health & Safety staff
presentation. This training is required for all workers prior to the use
of devices that produce x-rays.
