The DEHS is pleased to recognize the Student Health Services
Safety
committee as the Administrative Safety Committee of the year. The
committee consists of six members and is lead by Mr. Stephen Grasson.
They met four times in fiscal year 2000/2001. They reported three
injuries last year that were all investigated. Some of the actions they
have taken to prevent injuries are: making safety needles available
throughout the department, implemented several new procedures related to
infection control including the purchase and installation of a hepafilter
for an isolation room, revised their written policies for building
evacuation, infection control, and safety and corrected a problem
noted where vapors from the x-ray developing equipment were experienced
during
service calls.
They also conducted a self-study relative to building fire codes with
the assistance of the DEHS and made all necessary changes to be in full
compliance with these codes. This included the 4 fire drills for Laurel
Hall and 3 for sports medicine in the Bob Carpenter Center. Four facility
inspections were completed in July, October, February, and June.
Safety training was provided for their department in the areas of Right
to Know, Fire Safety, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Tuberculosis.
All these activities were partially responsible for their successful
completion of the requirements for their AAAHC accreditation
and certainly have resulted in a safer environment for both the employees
and visitors to the Student Health Services.
