Powered Industrial Trucks Safety Training
In accordance with the OSHA standard all personnel who utilize
powered industrial trucks must receive initial safety training prior to
the use of the equipment and periodic refresher safety
training every three years. Certain incidents require immediate
retraining. These incidents are:
- The operator has been observed to operate the vehicle in an unsafe
manner.
- The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
- The operator has received an evaluation that reveals that the operator
is not operating the truck safely.
- The operator is assigned to drive a different type of truck.
- A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect
safe operation of the truck.
For more information contact the Department of
Environmental Health & Safety, 831-8475 or visit our safety training calendar for
training times and registration information.
Initial and refresher training includes:
Classroom
instruction on the proper use of forklifts,
man-lifts, and pallet trucks;
Viewing a training DVD
which explains
the proper lifting capacity, dangers of improper use, completing inspections, providing hazard
communication and choosing the right industrial truck for the task;
Performance evaluation of each operator on the use of a forklift
and pallet lift truck to assess the operator's ability to maneuver a load
around obstacles in a safe manner. Training for all other types of lifts
will be performed at the operator's work area and signed off by his/her
supervisor. A copy will then be forwarded to the Department of
Environmental Health & Safety (132 GSB) to be kept on file.
Note: Any training that is provided by an outside vendor must
be documented. A copy of that training and those in attendance must be
filed with the respective Department as well as with the Department of
Environmental Health & Safety. For more information about the Powered Industrial Truck program, contact
Environmental Health and Safety or call 831-8475.
