Holiday Decorations on Campus

The key to making a decision about the type and quantity of decorations to use involves good common sense. The do’s and don’ts listed below will give you some guidelines. Contact your units’ supervisor for additional requirements.

DO’s

1.Use flame retardant decorations.

2.Use UL listed lights and appliances.

3.Use low wattage bulbs on light strings.

4.Use only flame retardant artificial or fire retardant treated cut or live trees. A flame retardant or treated cut tree must have written proof that the treatment meets applicable codes.

5.Use copious amounts of water if you use a live tree.

6.Keep the amount of decorations to a minimum.

7.Do call the Department of Environmental Health & Safety at 831-8475 if you have any questions.

8.Do have a safe holiday.

DON’TS

1. Do not block or obscure exit passageways.

2. Do not secure decorations to sprinkler piping, smoke detectors, exit signs, or any other life safety items.

3. Do not use open flame devices such as candles before consulting with your unit supervisor and see the Department of Environmental Health & Safety’s web page for Open Flame Permit Procedures. http://www.udel.edu/EHS/

3. Do not use spotlights to accent a decoration.

4. Do not place electrical cords under carpet.

5. Do not place cords in a walkway.

6. Do not put up a live Christmas tree more than fourteen days before December 25. Remove it on or before the last workday before Christmas.
