Student Council Packs Shoebox Gifts for Needy Children

Gifts for Needy Children

University of Delaware junior Emily Edmonds has been packing shoeboxes full of gifts for needy children every November since she was in second grade. This year, she decided to carry on the tradition of Operation Christmas Child, which is sponsored by the Samaritan's Purse international Christian relief organization, with a student organization at UD. As a result, the Student Council for Exceptional Children, which is organized through the School of Education, held an event last month to pack dozens of shoeboxes for needy children across the world. The shoeboxes were filled with necessities like socks and toothbrushes, toys, and even candy, then wrapped and sent to children living in poverty in remote or disaster-hit areas of the world. Students Empower Peers to Pursue International Research

Brown Bag Lunch

School of Education students and faculty brought more than just a brown-bag lunch to the table last month during a panel session on international research. Five representatives of SOE shared valuable information with other students about how to conduct international research and how to access available resources to further research interests. During the discussion, students and faculty also made several recommendations to students interested in conducting international research and traveling abroad. Stimulus Grant to Aid UD Professor in Studying Preschool Geometric Knowledge

Roberta Golinkoff

Roberta Golinkoff, H. Rodney Sharp Professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware, and graduate student Wilkey Wong wanted to know what preschool children understand about geometric shapes and how to manipulate them. There is a link between spatial skills and mathematical abilities for older children, but there is little research on what younger children can do. Now, with the help of a $904,828 federal stimulus grant from the National Institutes of Health, Golinkoff and Wong will be uncovering young students' geometric abilities. Book Presentation Honors Three Promoted Faculty in SOE

Professor Books

It's a tradition that began back in 2002. Every time professors who teach education majors receive promotions, they're also asked to choose a book that has had special meaning in their lives. Once those books are purchased in their honor, the professors present those books to the Education Resource Center and explain why the book means so much to them. Marika Ginsburg-Block, Nancy Lavigne and Chrystalla Mouza are the newest School of Education faculty to take part in this tradition. They were all promoted to Associate Professor back in the spring. To find out which books they chose, follow this link to the full story.
