Welcome to Mathematics Education!
Mathematics Education at the University of Delaware is a strongly-supported vibrant program that continues to grow through the shared efforts of 15 faculty members in the School of Education, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and the Mathematics & Science Education Resource Center.
Current research and development activities of the School of Education faculty include collaborative efforts to study and improve mathematics teacher preparation. Guided by a shared mission that emphasizes the gradual but steady improvement of teaching, faculty and doctoral students work together to help pre-service teachers acquire the competencies they need to study and improve their own teaching while simultaneously studying and improving their own practice as teacher educators and researchers.
In addition to these collaborative efforts, faculty pursue individual research agendas in many areas:
- Classroom discourse;
- Curricula implementation;
- Cross-cultural comparisons of mathematics teaching and learning;
- Equity and social justice;
- Mathematical reasoning of children and adults;
- Teacher preparation and professional development.
The University of Delaware is a privately endowed, publicly supported land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant, and urban-grant institution located in Newark, a town of about 30,000 located midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. With a student population of about 22,000, UD offers the best of a graduate research university and a university committed to excellent teaching. The beautiful campus is well-known for its tree-lined walks and colonial architecture, as can be seen on the University's virtual tour.
