PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS AND INTERVENTIONSResources for School Psychologists, Educators, and Parents
Over the past 10 or more years, graduate students in EDUC 618: Special Services in the Schools, have been asked to write a brief list of recommendations on a problem of their choice that they expect to be challenged with when working as school psychologists. The list was to be derived from recommendations commonly found in journal articles, book chapters, and on the web. Recommendations were to be reasonable, practical, and derived from authoritative sources. Preference was to be given to recommendations supported by research and theory, (but students were not required to document such). Therefore, please note that these recommendations are not necessarily “evidence-based” nor necessarily endorsed by the school psychology program. So, the consumer (you) should use your own judgment in selecting which recommendations are best for your particular case or needs. Note that the recommendations were compiled and edited by Karole Kurtz, school psychology graduate student and research assistant, and by me (the instructor for EDUC 618). In the editing process we deleted, modified, and added recommendations. Because multiple students wrote on many of the same topics, we integrated recommendations across the list. Topics are listed alphabetically, as well as by broader thematic groupings in the table of contents. Following the recommendations for each topic are additional resources including books, journal articles, and websites. The majority of the books listed are available at University of Delaware’s library and can be found by searching on DELCAT. Please note that the student(s) who developed the recommendations are listed at the end of each recommendation list. They are the ones who deserve much credit! Cheers, Note: The user of these recommendations has permission to copy and use them for his or her individual needs, but not to publish them in any form without permission of the author. Correction: The citations for Children’s Needs II: Development, Problems, and Alternatives, which appear several times throughout this document, are not entirely correct. An example of the correct citation is as follows:
