Applying to the M.Ed. in School Leadership
The M.Ed. in School Leadership is designed as a cohort-based program, with a new cohort beginning coursework each Summer. Applications for admissions are due by February 28 with notification in late Spring.
In support of and in partnership with school districts across Delaware, admissions to the M.Ed. in School Leadership program includes a nomination process. Superintendents, district leaders, principals and school leaders are encouraged to identify potential school leaders to participate in the program. A nomination form is available to facilitate districts' identification of candidates. However, if a district currently has a succession plan in place, district forms may be substituted for the program nomination form.
The program also welcomes candidates who do not apply through the nomination process, but we encourage students to discuss their leadership aspirations with their principals or superintendents as well.
For consideration, candidates will submit a packet of materials that includes:
- the online University of Delaware Graduate Admission application,
- a current resume,
- undergraduate transcript (a minimum GPA of 2.75 is recommended),
- a writing sample as indicated in the admissions application, and
- three letters of recommendation.
The letters of recommendation must include one from the candidate's principal, one from their superintendent, and another individual of their choice. If a principal or superintendent nominates the candidate using the program nomination form or district succession planning document, that will be considered a substitute for their letter of recommendation. The deadline for both the candidate’s application and nomination is February 28.
Applicants who have been nominated by their district, have strong letters of recommendation from their principal and superintendent, and are judged to have the academic qualifications will be invited to campus for an interview. Admission decisions are made by a team consisting of two full-time faculty members in Educational Leadership and a district superintendent. Students will be admitted to the program based upon program capacity and candidates' qualifications.
Please note, however, that any applicant seeking Delaware certification as a School Principal must have a valid teaching certificate and three years of teaching experience (or two years of teaching experience and one year internship). Additional information about the admissions process to the School of Education is available at www.udel.edu/education/masters/applying.html.
