MI Portfolio Requirements and Deadlines
The capstone project is a portfolio that is based on the individual teacher's practice and goals. The purpose of the portfolio is to examine the understanding of the teacher's students in relation to the teacher's actions in the classroom. The MI portfolio is aligned with National Board Certification through NBPTS, but is not equivalent. The portfolio has 3 entries, which are based on data collected from the teacher's classroom. Student work and video of the classroom serve as the data sources. Teachers should view the MI portfolio as a step towards National Board Certification.
All MI students must complete a portfolio as the capstone requirement for degree conferral. There are three portfolio courses that you must complete as part of the requirement.
All MI candidates complete EDUC 648 (Master's Portfolio: Standards and Framework) at the beginning of their program. If you are accepted for summer or fall admission, then you will take EDUC 648 during your first fall semester. If you are accepted for spring admission, then you will take EDUC 648 during your first spring semester. This course will provide the necessary insights into the portfolio process so that you can collect data throughout your program.
All MI candidates complete EDUC 748 (Master's Portfolio: Analysis of Practice) near the middle of their program. The course is offered during the fall and spring. This course begins to develop the skills you will use to analyze your practice.
All MI candidates complete EDUC 769 (Master's Portfolio: Evaluating Effectiveness) during their final summer in the program. You will complete your portfolio during this course, building on the work you began in EDUC 648 and EDUC 748. Because the portfolio is a capstone project, you must have completed 29 credits prior to enrolling in this course. That is, you may have at most one course remaining after completing the portfolio.
Portfolios are due at the end of EDUC 769 and are submitted to the instructor for review. When your portfolio has passed the review process and you have satisfied all other degree requirements, you will be set to graduate. This means that if EDUC 769 is the last course you need to complete, you will graduate at the end of the summer. If you have one course remaining after EDUC 769, then you will graduate in December or May.
