Applying to the MI Program

Applicants to the Master of Instruction program need to have:

  • Evidence of current employment as a PK-12 teacher.
  • A minimum graduate cumulative index of 3.0 for all graduate courses completed.
  • A minimum undergraduate cumulative index of 3.0 for all undergraduate courses completed.

Note: All teachers interested in applying to the School Library Media concentration must have completed the online course EDLM 626 Development of Libraries in Society (offered every fall and spring) prior to applying. Applications will not be considered unless this prerequisite is met.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit the following materials:

  1. Complete the steps of the UD online graduate application process, which requires you to obtain three recommendations from your principal, supervisors, or professional colleagues. One recommendation must be from your principal. All recommendations must include an evaluation of your instructional competencies, personal characteristics, and attitudes toward teaching. Recommendations may be submitted online, uploaded to your application, or submitted on paper. For detailed instructions see www.udel.edu/gradoffice/apply.
  2. In addition to the UD online graduate application process, you must complete the following:
    • Transcripts - UD transcripts do not need to be submitted.
    • Resume.
    • Master of Instruction Program Application Supplement.

Please download the Program Application Supplement and complete it.

      The MI supplement includes:

      • A cover letter in which a Major Content area of emphasis must be selected. You must pick ONLY ONE area. Upon admission into the program, your content choice will be used to match you with an appropriate university advisor. Your choice does NOT limit your choice of coursework.
      • An analysis of your teaching strengths and weaknesses as a classroom teacher against the five core propositions of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.
      • A statement of professional goals with a supervisor's signature indicating that the supervisor agrees that your goals are reasonable and will improve the quality of instruction in your classroom. Upon admission into the program, your university advisor will use the goals in helping you select appropriate coursework.
      • An estimated time-line in which you intend to complete the program requirements.

You will upload three parts of the MI supplement as part of the electronic application process through the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies: (a) the cover letter, (b) analysis of teaching strengths and weaknesses, and (c) estimated completion time-line.

You will fax the fourth part of the MI supplement, the statement of professional goals, to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies.
