Master's Programs in the School of Education

Master of Instruction (M.I.)

The Master of Instruction (M.I.) program is for current teachers who want to improve their instructional practice through reflection and focus on individualized goals. This 31 credit hour program is designed to be completed on a part-time basis by teachers throughout the State of Delaware, and most of the courses are offered in Sussex and Kent Counties as well as on the Newark campus. APPLICATION DEADLINES: April1 (Fall entry), November 1 (Spring entry) and February 1 (Summer entry)

M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction has specializations in mathematics, science, and social studies. This program is primarily designed for students with a strong content background in one of these areas who want to deepen their understanding of the subject through research and curriculum inquiry. However, students with a bachelor's degree in a natural science (i.e. biology, chemistry, physics, or geology) may obtain secondary science certification (in grades 7-12) through this degree program. Students in this 33-credit program may enroll on either a full or part-time basis, but a full-time internship experience is required of anyone seeking secondary science certification. M.Ed. in Educational Technology

The Master of Education in Educational Technology is designed for individuals who seek both a theoretical and practical understanding of educational technology. This 33 credit program stresses the relationships among curriculum design, instructional theory, and information technology. Students may engage in full or part-time study, and graduates of the program work in a variety of educational settings in K-12 and higher education institutions, as well as state and regional departments of education. M.Ed. in Exceptional Youth and Children

The Master of Education in Exceptional Youth and Children prepares candidates to become certified to teach special education in either elementary or secondary schools. It is also a program that certified special education teachers may enroll in who want to improve their practice or gain additional knowledge in a specialized area of exceptionality such as autism or educational diagnosis. Students in this 33 credit program enroll on either a full or part-time basis, but a full-time student teaching experience is required of anyone seeking certification through this program. M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration

The Master of Education in Higher Education prepares candidates to work in a leadership capacity in colleges, universities, and other adult programs. Students in this 33 credit program are generally part-time students who continue with their full-time employment while enrolled in the program. M.Ed. in Reading

The Master of Education in Reading is designed to prepare practicing teachers to become Reading Specialists. This 33 credit program focuses on classroom teaching, intervention with students who struggle with reading, and the management and assessment of reading programs. Students may engage in full or part-time study, and graduates will be granted reading specialist certification by the State of Delaware and all other states accredited by NCATE. M.Ed. in School Leadership

The Master of Education in School Leadership prepares K-12 educators for certification as a principal or school administrator. Students in this 33 credit program are generally part-time students who continue with their full-time employment while enrolled in the program. M.A. and Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology

The Master of Arts and Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology is a competitive, full-time program for students who seek certification as a School Psychologist. This 60 credit program includes two years of full-time coursework plus a third year full-time internship under the auspices of a licensed school psychologist. M.Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

The Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) prepares students to become certified to teach children for whom English is not their native language. The TESL program also appeals to students who wish to teach English to adults and children overseas, both in school and non-school settings. Full-time study in this 33 credit program is encouraged, and students who seek TESL certification must complete a full-time internship experience.
