Social Studies Education

Important Notice

Currently, we are not accepting applications for admission to the M.Ed. program in Curriculum and Instruction in the Social Studies Education concentration for the 2009-10 academic year. We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you are already a social studies teacher, you should consider enrolling in the Master of Instruction (M.I.) program. The M.I. program is a degree for practicing PK-12 teachers who want to improve their instructional practice. The program strengthens teachers' capacity to study and improve their own practice through reflection and focus on individualized goals. The capstone project is a portfolio that is based on the individual teacher's practice and goals. The M.I. portfolio is aligned with National Board Certification through NBPTS, but is not equivalent. Teachers should view the M.I. portfolio as a step towards National Board Certification. For more information about this program, please see http://www.udel.edu/education/masters/instruction.

For more information about the social studies track within the M.I. program, please contact Dr. Sarah Jewett, 213F Willard Hall, (302) 831-1166.

For those who have a degree in History and seek an initial certification program, the History department has an M.A. program that leads to initial certification in grades 7-12 Social Studies. More information about this program may be obtained from Dr. Barry Joyce, bjoyce@udel.edu, (302) 831-2371.
