Financial Aid

Most full-time graduate students in the School of Education have been awarded assistantships, based on merit, either directly from the School or through one of the many research and service centers in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy. Assistantships are usually awarded as a Teaching Assistantship, a Research Assistantship, a Clinical Assistantship, or a Public Service Assistantship. All of these assistantships include a tuition waiver for fall and spring semesters, and a stipend to cover living expenses and health insurance. Eighty percent of the basic health insurance plan is subsidized by the University, and graduate students have the option of adding additional coverage for family members. Graduate assistants work 20 hours per week, generally from September through May, on a sponsored research project, assisting a faculty member in teaching a class, or in a variety of school or community-based projects depending upon the nature of their assistantship. In addition to the School of Education, the following CHEP Centers provide graduate assistantships for education students:

In addition to these College-based Centers, education graduate students often find assistantships through some of the other student-oriented offices on campus such as the Office of Housing and Residence Life, the MBNA Careers Services Center, and the Center for Black Culture.

A limited number of full-time graduate students who are employed outside the University during their graduate study are awarded Tuition Scholarships that cover the cost of tuition for fall and spring semester, but do not provide a stipend and do not require a 20-hour per week work commitment.

Part-time graduate students are eligible to apply for various Federal and state loans and grants through the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Graduate students who are teachers should also check with their employer to see if tuition reimbursement is available, and students who are Delaware public school teachers are reminded that Delaware teachers can attend graduate courses tuition-free during the summer, although a minimal registration and general fee are charged.

Application and Deadline

Applicants who are interested in being considered for Assistantships or Tuition Scholarships should indicate their interest on the initial program application form and should also complete the School of Education's Application for Funding at the time they apply for admission.
