Middle School Science Concentration
ETE majors who pursue this concentration can become certified in middle school science (Delaware 6-8). All courses must be successfully completed with a grade of C- or better. The concentration is composed of 24 credits, bringing the total number of credits for the major to 121.
Note: Students who pursue this concentration and want to teach in New York need to review the steps to teacher certification in New York.
Course Requirements
In addition to the courses required in the ETE major, students take the following courses.
- SCEN 650*
- Biology (6 credits)
- Earth science (3 credits)
- Environmental science (3 credits)
- Physical science (6 credits)
- One free elective course (3 credits in any area)
Students take the following course in the first semester of their senior year immediately before their student teaching semester.
- EDUC 443: Teaching Science in Middle School (Fall only)
In addition, students in this concentration spend their second 8-week student teaching placement in a middle school mathematics classroom.
- EDUC 400: Student Teaching: Middle School Science
*SCEN 650
This course is offered every fall and is taken during the same semester that you take EDUC 443. It covers topics in earth science, biology, or physical science depending on the semester and will follow the rotation below through the topics.
- Fall 2008: Earth Science
- Fall 2009: Biology
- Fall 2010: Physical Science
- Fall 2011: Earth Science
SCEN 650 will substitute for 3 credits in earth science, biology, or physical science depending on the topic of the course you take. For example, if you take SCEN 650 in Fall 2009 when the topic is biology, then this course satisfies 3 credits of the biology requirement, and you only need to take 3 more credits in biology to satisfy the biology requirement (6 credits total).
