This page lists scholarships and grants that are available to students in the ETE program.
CHEP Scholar's Program
The College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy (CHEP) typically offers up to ten awards to sophomore and junior majors in the college to engage in research with a CHEP faculty member. Each CHEP Scholar will receive a stipend of $3,000 and a summer housing allowance of $500. Applications are usually due in March. Scholars work on their projects full-time for ten weeks in the summer and continue to pursue their research for three credits in the following academic year. The research completed during the academic year may be part of the senior thesis for the Degree with Distinction or Honors Degree with Distinction. Cecil County Retired School Personnel Association Scholarship
This scholarship is given annually to Cecil County, Maryland residents who graduated from a Cecil County high school and are entering their junior or senior year in a field of education. Application materials are due each year on April 4. Applications are available in the Office of Undergraduate Services, School of Education, WHL 120.
MAEE Scholarship for Diversity in Teaching
The Mid-Atlantic Association for Employment in Education (MAEE), an organization which promotes professional standards and practices in teacher preparation and job placement, offers the Scholarship for Diversity in Teaching annually. Application materials, including application form, essay, and official transcript, are due each year on November 1. Christa McAuliffe Teacher Incentive Program
The Christa McAuliffe Teacher Incentive Program provides loans that are renewable for up to three additional years with a cumulative GPA of 2.75. There is a provision where each year of the loan is forgiven for every year of teaching in a Delaware public school after graduation. The eligibility requirements for the program include: legal residents of Delaware; U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens; full-time students enrolled at a Delaware college in an undergraduate program leading to teacher certification; and undergraduates must have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. In addition, preference is given to applicants planning to teach in a critical need area as defined by the Delaware Department of Education. Application requirements include a completed application form, an essay of 1,000 to 1,200 words, and either a high school academic record report and transcript or college grade release form (applicants with 12 or more college credits). Applications can be completed at https://www.doe.k12.de.us/high-ed/student/login.aspx, and all materials must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009.
College Scholarships for Students with Parents with Disabilities
Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are offering five separate $1000 awards to be given out in the fall of 2009. Eligibility requirements include: current enrollment in a college or university; being 21 years of age or younger as of March 16, 2009; and having at least one parent with a disability. Selection criteria for scholarships include: academic performance; community activities and service; letters of recommendation; and an essay describing the experience of growing up with a parent with a disability. Special Education, Middle School Mathematics, or Middle School Science Students
- TEACH Grant. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program will provide up to $4,000 annually in aid to undergraduate and graduate students who plan to become teachers in a "high need" subject (e.g., special education, middle school math, middle school science) and maintain a 3.25 GPA. Total grant funding cannot exceed $16,000 for undergraduate students and $8,000 for graduate students. Participants must sign a contract to teach a "high need" subject in a "high need" school for at least four years within eight of the completion of their education program. Please note that in the event that you do not or cannot complete the studies for which you received the grant or their four-year service requirement, all money acquired from a TEACH Grant converts into an unsubsidized Stafford Loan that must be repaid to the Department of Education. - MAEE Critical Need Teacher Scholarship. The Mid-Atlantic Association for Employment in Education (MAEE) Critical Need Teacher Scholarship is available annually. Critical needs areas for the ETE program include math, science, and special education. Special Education Students
The Daniel and Lois Gray Memorial Scholarship (funded by the Autism Society of Delaware) is available for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in special education, psychology, linguistics, or speech pathology with a special interest in people with autism. The scholarship is worth $1000. Please note that financial aid is given consideration, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required, and preference is given to Autism Society of Delaware members or relatives of members. The deadline is February 28. Applications are available in the Office of Undergraduate Services, School of Education, WHL 120, and more information about the Autism Society of Delaware can be found at www.delautism.org.
Middle School Social Studies Students
- Secretary of State Social Studies Education Scholarship. The goal of this scholarship is to promote and enhance the teaching of civics in Delaware schools by encouraging outstanding Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) majors to concentrate in the area of social studies. ETE freshmen who are Delaware residents, have completed their first semester in the major, and are willing to commit to concentrating in the area of social studies are eligible to apply. Two students will receive $2,200 per year for three years as long as they maintain satisfactory academic progress towards their degree. The payments will be made directly to UD for direct educational costs (tuition, fees, books, etc.). The application deadline is February 28, and the application is available at the Office of Undergraduate Services, School of Education, WHL 120. One of the application requirements is a 4-6 page essay about the importance of the U.S. Constitution to young people today.The awardees will be presented each spring at the Honors Day ceremonies in early May. The awards will be presented by the Secretary of State or her designee.
- Bernice Samalonis Social Studies Scholarship. This scholarship for $700 is sponsored by The Middle States Council for the Social Studies. The deadline is December 15, and the requirements are being a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in Social Studies or History education, or, Elementary education with a concentration in Social Science teacher certification, and having at least a 3.0 GPA. Applicants must send in a copy of their resume, a 500-word career goals statement, two recommendations from professors, and a copy of their official transcript.
