Elementary Teacher Education Course Requirements

Students in the nationally accredited Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) program are eligible for elementary education teaching certification (Delaware K-6). In addition, they choose a concentration in one of the following areas:

ETE students who pursue a middle school or the Special Education concentration are eligible for certification in those areas in addition to elementary education. Having a second certificate in these high-needs areas make our graduates very marketable!

The program requirements for ETE majors who entered the program in the following years are available through the links below. The list of approved English literature courses is available online.

The coursework in the ETE program enables students to learn the content knowledge, how to teach this content, and the pedagogical skills to be an effective classroom teacher, and it can be divided into three areas.

  • The General Studies courses include the following subject areas: natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences, English/linguistics, and fine arts.
  • The Professional Studies courses are designed to develop students’ teaching skills. The courses place strong emphasis on the development of teachers who can plan and implement appropriate educational experiences for children of varying levels of ability.
  • The Concentration courses provide students with an opportunity to pursue one of the following areas: middle school English, middle school mathematics, middle school science, middle school social studies, special education and urban education.
